It looks like Leo is going to have his very own 8 year old boy!
Yesterday I talked with Julie in Albuquerque. She has 2 sons, 12 and 8. The younger boy knows Leo's brother Kip well through the READ program at school. Apparently Kip has helped Jacob make great strides in reading, and his sweet temperament made the family want a dog "just like Kip" to be Jacob's buddy. They had planned to have Penni help them look for one this summer after Julie's husband returned from deployment in Iraq.
Well...I can't imagine a dog more like Kip than his brother Leo. :o) And although timing isn't what the family was originally thinking, it hopefully works out pretty well from a transport perspective since several cardi people from the SW are going to be driving to the National. I'm hoping that Leo will be able to hitch a ride with someone...his breeder is declining to help, so I'll need to reach out to others and hope we get lucky. Fingers crossed!

If I only had my camera at 5 am
I could have snapped a picture of Leo, who decided to make himself a bed. By knocking our laundry hamper that was full of clean, folded clothes on its' side, and curling up within. Funny, usually he prefers the dirty clothes in the closet.
He is the funniest, quirkiest little dog. He LOVES to sleep in a "den". If I was nice, I'd provide him a tiny crate that he could stuff himself into at night. But with the door open please...he doesn't take that kindly to being shut in. I actually prefer to see what he comes up with himself because it never fails to crack me up. One time, for some reason the lowest drawer in my dresser was left halfway open. He opened it further and climbed in. During the day his preferred place to sleep is either in the cubby under my desk, on as much of my feet as I'll let him, or in the dark laundry room in the crevice behind the door.
And with all this rhapsodizing about Leo and his hilarity, I have been waffling back and forth for a long time about Leo finding a forever home with someone else. This has been a ridiculously hard decision, because it's not like he NEEDS to go anywhere. It's purely selfish on my part, and that tears me up. I know that breeders place retired champions often, but I don't want to get into a situation where I cycle through a lot of dogs. It's expensive for one thing! LOL Of course, I also am at my dog limit right now, and that limit isn't changing. So if I want to continue with my hobby, then something else needs to change. And I'd really like to be in a position to keep a puppy out of Lizzie, whoever breeds her.
This is hard.

Various updates
Dog shows suck. We had one of those weekends last weekend that makes me ponder why I enjoy this sport. :o) No further comment really necessary, except that when Lizzie is bald she doesn't look fat anymore!
I have made some more adjustments on the feeding front. As I figured, cooking becomes a bit of a pain after a while. Raw = easy. Now that Leo and I have gotten over the hump so to speak of raw food, I'm moving more to that. I also discovered The Honest Kitchen dehydrated raw complete diets. Price is similar to what I'm spending to buy my own raw, veggies, and supplements. So the current diet is raw chicken wings in the morning with whatever veggies I have around. I put each dog and bowl on a towel to eat, which they prefer to chasing their food across the floor anyway. Toss the towels into the washer every couple of days. The Honest Kitchen for the evening meal...we're trying a couple of different formulas. Brady has proven once again that he's completely unable to deal with once a day feedings...he's a barfer if his stomach gets too empty. And yes, he still has gas. It doesn't seem like much of anything I try really "stops" it. One of the Honest Kitchen formulas seems to be better than the rest on that front, but I like the idea of rotating for variety.
And, 5 weeks until the National! You hear that Lizzie...5 weeks to grow some fur! :P

I wonder where I could hide the body...
Lizzie has decided that she no longer needs to go outside to go potty if she needs to go during the night. She won't go in our bedroom, so she sneaks out of the room and downstairs. We have to leave our door ajar slightly because if Charlie wakes up in the middle of the night, for some reason she won't open our bedroom door and instead starts throwing a nuclear fit right outside.
So, I have decided that Lizzie no longer needs to sleep on a nice cushy bed, and can instead sleep in her crate.
In retaliation, she now decided that she can ALSO use her indoor potty during the day while we are occupied with working, cooking, or playing with the kids.
I suspect/hope that this is simply because she's due to come into season any day, by the way. It's been going on for not quite a week. She may not survive another one! :D
